A three-pass steam boiler is a boiler used to generate steam. Its design contains three unique hot gas circulation paths to more effectively utilize the thermal energy of the fuel and improve energy efficiency. This type of boiler is typically used in heating systems or industrial processes to provide thermal energy by heating water and converting it into steam.
The following is the basic working principle of a three-pass steam boiler:
- First return pass (combustion return pass): Fuel (usually natural gas, fuel oil, etc.) is burned in the combustion chamber of the boiler to produce high-temperature combustion gas. The flame and hot gas formed by these combustion gases in the combustion chamber pass through the first return pass in the boiler, which is the first circulation of hot gas.
- Second return pass (convection return pass): The hot gas passes through the smoke tube or tube bundle of the boiler and transfers heat to the water on the inner wall of the smoke tube and the surface of the tube bundle. This is done by convective heat transfer, where the hot gas loses some of its heat on the return journey, while the water is heated and converted into steam. This is the second cycle of hot gas.
- The third return pass (radiation return): After the hot gas passes through the smoke tube, there is still some residual heat. In the third return pass, this waste heat is transferred to water or steam by radiation, so that the last part of the heat is effectively used. This is the third cycle of hot gas.
Through this design, the three-pass steam boiler can capture and utilize the heat energy in the fuel more effectively and improve energy efficiency. This is useful for industrial processes, power plants or heating systems that require large amounts of steam. The design of the radiant return can effectively reduce unused heat in the flue gas and improve overall boiler performance.
